This classical basset horn is a reproduction of the original Johann Heinrich Grenser, Dresden, around 1790. The eight basic keys are speaker, A, Ab/Eb, F/C, E/B, F#/C# with two basset keys: D, and C. We construct this instrument with up to nine keys and four basset keys, following and adapting the Gottfried Schuster, Markneukirchen basset horn.
When Mozart first encountered the tone of the basset horn, it became one of his favorite instrument. He incorporated it into almost all of his compositions and even wrote specific music for it. Beyond Mozart's celebrated work, other composers including Mendelssohn wrote for it. Moreover, Richard Strauss played a pivotal role in reviving interest in the instrument and reintroducing it to orchestral settings towards the end of the 19th century and into the 20th century.
