This 5-key D (Re) clarinet draws inspiration from the craftsmanship of J.H. Ebble White, a London-based maker. An important clarinet type of the 18th-century, the D clarinet was used in early operatic and theatrical repertoire by Jean-Benjamin de La Borde in Gilles garçon peintre, z’amoureux-t-et-rival; Johann Christian Bach in Orione and Amadis des Gaules; André Grétry in Le Huron, L’amitié à l’épreuve, and Céphale et Procris; and Étienne-Joseph Floquet in L’union de l’amour et des arts.
Richard Strauss, in his revision of Berlioz’s Treatise on Instrumentation, noted that the D clarinet was often replaced in practice by the Eb clarinet, even though it had an important role in earlier orchestral music. He appreciated its unique sound in Romantic orchestral color and used it for playful, humorous effects in his tone poem Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks.
